A Look Back: Our Best St. John’s Moments

December 12, 2008

Aloha,

No matter what year you are in here at St. John’s, it probably only took you a little while to see the diverse opinions of the school from the student body. Many run into problems early on and form negative opinions about it. But others are able to get past that and form better opinions. And throughout one’s time here, there is a chance of getting outstanding opportunities from St. John’s.

When I came to St. John’s, I wasn’t sure of what exactly the school had to offer me other than what they stated on paper. I entered the University as a psychology major, thinking I knew exactly what I wanted to do after school. Things changed along the way, and come sophomore year, I was a journalism major. From that point on, the opportunities came.

I started writing for The Torch and after wowing my editor with my first film review, my second assignment was a little better: I would attend a press screening of Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and subsequently interview the cast of the movie. Coming from Santa Barbara, Calif., I knew I was not going to get that same opportunity if I stayed at home and attended UC Santa Barbara. I’d get to see the celebrities that live in Santa Barbara sure, but interview them? Most likely not. After that first round of interviews, St. John’s has given me the chance to meet more celebrities: Jack Black and Kyle Gass of Tenacious D; John Cusack; Neil Patrick Harris and Kal Penn (better known as Kumar); the women of Sex and the City. Those are just some of the names.

But enough about me. I’ve talked with several students who will soon graduate from St. John’s about their unique opportunities. What I found were varied results, but one thing remained constant: St. John’s offered them fantastic opportunities that they will remember (possibly) forever. (more…)

Flashlight Special: Who Said Graduates of St. John’s Don’t Make it Big?

December 12, 2008

schwab_logo1Hey there, stressful Johnnies,

Well, just like all of you reading this post, I am stressing out hardcore! I got one of my finals out of the way, and got two more to go (doubtful that you really cared, but too bad, I’m telling you anyways). Now, before you go commit academic suicide, just know that the work you are doing could lead to something big in the future. Maybe even famous!

Before I did this, I walked around campus to see if I could get some influence on who the students wanted to see in the post.

“There are famous people who have graduated from St. John’s?” replied one student.

“How about Britney Spears?” replied another. (I really wish I could have made that one up) (more…)

Our Last Bow…

December 8, 2008

Hey St. John’s…

As we all know, we are inching closer and closer to the end of the semester (insert excitement dance here). Time for the finals, the massive amounts of ramen noodles consumption, and the beautiful thoughts of vacation.

Well, as you may or may not know about our blog, we are a group of students here on campus actually taking a class in online news, and this was our major assignment of the semester. We were here to keep you guys informed on the news within the confines of the university, as well as any odds and ends that we seemed deemed right for you.

We really had fun writing for you guys, so we have all figured we would give you one more great week of blogs for this semester. So, the entire staff is locked on to giving you guys the news you will need to know about YOUR university, YOUR thoughts, and YOUR future. We will be doing feature stories all week long to keep you entertained during finals week. Famous alums, students opinions on the state of the university, and what our graduating/graduated students are doing now.

So, we hope you all stay tuned in all week long as you struggle to get those high marks (insert grunts and gurgles here)

We all have enjoyed starting this blog for you guys. We all started off having no idea what we were getting ourselves into but now, thanks to you guys, our success and viewers continue to grow. We have no one else to thank but all of you students who followed us all semester. Without you, were not here right now.

In conclusion, stay tuned this week! I promise it will be a much needed break. And be prepared for future plans on the site, as most or all of us will continue to keep giving our insight on the outside world after the semester end.

Thank you, and good luck to all,

The Flashlight staff

Thanksgiving: California Style [UPDATED with pictures]

November 27, 2008
Aloooooooooha,

You know, the funny thing about me saying aloha, it gave the impressions to my fellow bloggers that I was from Hawaii. I like Hawaii, but I’m from California everybody (if nobody’s picked up on that by now). Let’s give you a little look into what goes on here: (more…)

Flashlight Special: Thanksgiving Abroad

November 25, 2008

Aloha,

With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, the University is starting to see the effects. My Journalism Ethics class this morning had no more than 10 or 11 students there (half the class). I’m sure most of you have seen dwindling numbers – or you were part of those absent. Don’t worry, we won’t judge.

What we will do, though, is give you a Thanksgiving special this weekend. Some of us here are from many a mile away from New York. I’m from California for instance. That said, we’re going to give you Thanksgiving perspectives from our own respective regions. Feel free to comment below as to what you are doing this Thanksgiving. Have a good one.
