Aloooha ladies and gents,

As we close out our time on the blog, here’s at least one more sports round up. Let’s see what we have this week:

This week I’m coming to you liiiiiive from McCarren International Airport in beautifully trashy Laaaas Vegas! I think the stench of cigarette grows naturally here!  Or I’m now sitting at work. Vacation is over and reality as set in. Here’s what’s going on with Red Storm Sports:

Women’s Basketball: Well check out who’s on a streak. Sunday saw four players score double digits, with senior Monique McLean leading the pack with 24 points for the 70-58 win over Vermont. Joy McCorvey, Sky Lindsay and Da’Shena Stevens rounded out the rest of the double digit group. The win brings their record to 6-0. And with standout performances, McLean was named to the Big East Honor Roll.

Men’s Basketball: D.J. Kennedy nailed down a double double Monday to ensure a Red Storm victory over St. Francis, 69-61. Kennedy scored 17 points with 13 rebounds. After jumping out to a 19-point lead at the end of the first half, the Red Storm almost blew it but stayed with it just long enough. The men’s team stands at 6-1.

Softball: Big news on the recruiting front for softball as two players signed National Letters of Intent. Coach Amy Kvilhaug announced Katie Mason and Dominique Marcelino will enter the University in the 2009-2010 class.

STJ Sports Round-Up

And aloooooooooha to you and yours,

Basketball is getting to “full-swing” level while others are pushing their way through the playoffs. Let’s see what we have here:

Women’s Basketball: The women’s team improved to an unbeaten 3-0 to start the season by taking down Manhattan College for the eleventh straight time, 63-54 on Saturday. Freshman Da’Shena Stevens took it to Manhattan with 20 points and 13 rebounds against the Jaspers.

Men’s Basketball: Faced with the task of replacing injured standout player Anthony Mason Jr., the sophomores of the men’s basketball team blasted Howard University with a combined 46-point night. The Johnnies walked away with a 79-44 win. Mason Jr. won’t be walking away, though. The senior will undergo season-ending foot surgery after tearing the peroneal tendon in his right foot. The Flashlight sends our best to a speedy recovery.

Women’s Volleyball: Notre Dame’s Fightin’ Irish proved to be just a bit too much for women’s volleyball, deceptively downing the Red Storm 3-1 this past Saturday in the semifinals of the Big East Tourney. The sets were closer than the match shows, with the scores settling in as follows: 25-23, 20-25, 21-25, 25-27. On a lighter note, senior Wioleta Leszczynska racked up another honor, getting named to the 2008 Big East Volleyball All-Tournament team. Congrats out to her.

Men’s Soccer: The Red Storm will host Boston University on Tuesday night to kick off (no pun intended) the 2008 NCAA Tourney. FREE tickets will be available at the UC starting at 4 pm. So get out there and support the No. 3 ranked team.

STJ Sports Round-Up

Well St. John’s, we have a little excitement and a little disappointment this week. Without further delay, here you go:

Women’s Volleyball: After an incredible season, the women’s volleyball team suffered a disappointing loss to DePaul on Sunday, dropping the match 3-1. The game was the last regular season match. On the bright side, the team finished 12-2 in the Big East, a first-place finish.

Men’s Soccer: The men’s soccer team advanced to the Big East Championship but ultimately fell short on Sunday, losing to No. 14 University of South Florida. The final score was 1-0 in overtime.

Men’s Basketball: Looks like Carnesecca Arena opened with enough Red Storm love to help St. John’s down LIU, 73-63 on Saturday. Sophomore D.J. Kennedy led St. John’s with 23 points and fellow sophomore Sean Evans followed suite with his first career double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds).

Women’s Basketball: The women’s team opened up with good tidings first on Friday, dominating Northeastern 70-52. Junior Joy McCorvey nailed down a double-double with 15 points to go along side with 12 rebounds.

After a Manic Monday (I wish it was Sundaaaaay… because I wouldn’t have ended up in the laptop shop 3 times), you get your sports on Taco Tuesday! And all the better, because I have some honors to post about:

Women’s Volleyball: Senior Wioleta Leszczynska was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after some hardcore dominance in Saturday’s 3-2 win over UConn.

Men’s Soccer: The team has maintained their No. 4 ranking on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll after downing Seton Hall 3-1 and defeating No. 1 USF 1-0 last week.

Women’s Soccer: Another disappointing loss for women’s soccer, as they dropped the opening of their road trip with a 1-0 loss to Georgetown.

In 1994 St. John’s was pressured to change its nickname because American Indian groups felt Redmen was a slur on their heritage. A University committee, headed by Lou Caresecca, was established in November of ’93 to review nickname changes, and in June of ’94, after finishing the worst basketball season in 31 years, Carnesecca held a news conference announcing the school’s new nickname and logo. After faculty, alumini and students were polled, Redstorm was agreed upon as the new nickname. The University says the nickname is here to stay, saying it represents an uprising.

The Redmen was said to have originated from the red uniforms the football team used to wear, but its logo definately suggested otherwise.

Here we go again:

Men’s Soccer: After taking down Villanova 3-0, junior Nelson Becerra was named Big East Player of the Week, while fellow junior Joel Gustafsson was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week. Read more here.

Women’s Volleyball: On Friday October 10, the women’s volleyball team swept Rutgers University to improve their record to 4-1 in the Big East and 13-7 overall.

Women’s Cross Country: The team placed fourth at the Metropolitan Championships in Riverdale, N.Y. over the weekend, an improvement from an eighth place finish last year.

Women’s soccer: The women’s soccer team took a 1-0 lead into the 73rd minute of Friday’s game against Marquette, but couldn’t hold on as the opposition rallied to win 2-1.

STJ Sports Round-Up

While Major League Baseball is presenting a solid playoff year, St. John’s sports are still going strong:

Men’s Golf: Currently, the men’s team is fourth in the second round of the Mission Inn Classic. Senior Casey Calmi is tied for third overall.

Softball: Women’s softball swept a two game series over thew weekend, drowning out Sacred Heart 6-1 and Fairfeild 8-0. Sophomore pitcher Linzee Sumrall impressed with seven-strikeout performance against Sacred Heart. Fellow sophomore Kat Lawrence responded against Fairfield with a no-hitter.

Men’s Soccer: All streaks must come to an end, as it seems, as men’s soccer’s streak came to an end against No. 14 Louisville. The No. 2 team in the nation kept it close, but dropped the 2-1 game.

Women’s Golf: The women’s golf team is currently tied for the overall lead at the ECAC Championship in Williamsburg, VA.

Women’s Volleyball: In a Sunday afternoon match, the volleyball team beat down Syracuse 3-1 in a Big East match up. Sophomore Kun Song led the team with 17 kills.

STJ Sports Round Up

The Flashlight is back with another sports round up. Here’s what happened to our Johnnies:

Women’s Volleyball: Volleyball has improved to 2-0 in the Big East Conference after edging out the University of Louisville, 3-2. Red Storm Sports reports senior Valeria Kovaleva had a career-high 20 kills, with seniors Casie Brooks and Lena Yee leading the team in digs.

Women’s Cross Country: Freshman Sabine Scheinder led the cross country team with a 10th place finish at Fairfield University’s 32nd Annual Father Leeber S.J. Invitational this past Saturday.

Golf: Red Storm golf placed fifth out of an overall 19 teams at the Yale Fall Intercollegiate in New Haven, Conn. over the weekend. Junior Michele Romano was the team’s star player.

Men’s Soccer: The No. 4 Johnnies pulled out a 1-0 victory against No. 22 Providence on Sunday, with junior Nelson Becerra coverting the game winning goal off of a penalty kick. St. John’s improves to 8-0-2 on the season.

Women’s Soccer: On their trip out to Pittsburgh, the women’s soccer team dropped their match against Pitt, 1-0. With the loss, St. John’s drops to 4-2-4 on the season, and 0-1-2 in Big East play.
